Overview

Mabena, Godlonton and Associates, t/a Labour Associates is a consulting business founded in 2016. The two founding partners are the foundation of the business and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in their respective areas of expertise.

Objectives

The objective of Labour Associates is to become your go to company for back office services. This includes Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Administration, Payroll, Pre-employment checks and Profiling services. In other words: we aim to provide a service to you whether small or big that allows you to focus on your business’s CORE function.

People

Andrew Godlonton

Andrew joined OK Bazaars Ltd in 1981 as a trainee manager and completed the relevant training courses in retail. He then moved onto Makro in 1984 as a Cash Manager, until moving on to Milborrow Animal Health as a Branch Manager. When Milborrow closed down, he moved into Checkers, where he gained further FMCG experience as a Sales manager, which proved vital in his career when he moved on to Beacon Sweets. Putting all previous experience to good use resulting in “Achiever of the Year” in 1992 and 1994. Opportunity arose to open his own Sales and Merchandising business which was later sold to the VMS Group in 1999, where he became a Partner in VMS KZN, taking over as Operations Director in 2003.

In 2005 Andrew transferred to VMS Operations in Johannesburg as head of the Merchandising Division for large principles including the Premier Foods account. In 2008 Andrew formally moved into the Human Resources and Industrial Relations side of the business undergoing much training especially in Industrial Relations. The VMS Group was later bought out by CIC Holdings and again by Imperial Logistics.

Rewarded after 17 years with VMS, Andrew ended his term as Human Resources and Industrial Relations Executive for Imperial Retail Solutions, one of the Imperial Holdings operating companies.

Andrew completed the Advanced Labour Law Programme, through UNISA and then obtained a qualification through Stellenbosch University in Labour Dispute Resolution Practice (serves as the qualification for CCMA Commissioners)

Andrew left the business to open Mabena, Godlonton and Associates.

Eddie Mabena

Eddie studied Hotel Management at the Wits Technikon. After completing his diploma, he worked for Holiday Inns, Southern Suns and Sun International in various senior positions where he developed his hospitality industry knowledge, expertise and general management skills.Armed with these skills, Eddie left the hotel business in 1994 to pursue other business opportunities in the petroleum industry where he was self-employed. He joined Grey Security Services In 1998, where he was responsible for the outsourced security services at Carnival City. He then went on to join the now defunct Health & Racquet Club group as an Area Club General Manager responsible for gyms in the South area and the development of the Southgate Virgin Active.

Eddie went on to complete a number of courses on High Performance Management at the Learning Resources Institute in 2001 and completed a MAP at the Wits Business School in 2003. He joined African Bank in the same year as the head of the Inland North region operation with annual turnover of R450m and controlling a budget of R300m per year. In 2007 Eddie joined IL Holdings as an Executive and took responsibility for the forestry division of the company, which included management of the joint venture on a sawmilling operation in Mpumalanga, timber supply operations in KwaZulu-Natal and the development of new markets for the sale of timber.

In 2008 Eddie was appointed a Director in IL Holdings, responsible for the day to day running of the business. In the same year Eddie was also appointed to serve as a Director at LSC Staffing Solutions where ILH held a 26% stake in that company.

Eddie also served on the board of the VMS Group where he was responsible for Business Transformation and Corporate Social Investment. Amongst all these Eddie also manages Lomkhethi Trading Enterprise which is primarily involved in training and sector skills advising for the FP&M Seta. The company is accredited to train on Lumber Milling and General Forestry, focusing on Skills Programmes and Learnerships for both employed and unemployed learners. Over and above this Eddie assisted in the setting up of Employment Equity Committees for VMS Group and in the process also chaired the meetings.
